Arabic Design Archive

www.arabicdesignarchive.com

The Arabic Design Archive is a research initiative that is aiming to preserve, document, and disseminate historical material about Arabic design. The project’s goal is to make these materials available for scholars, students, and practitioners to facilitate research and publishing about the history of Arabic design. The project has a collection of over seven thousands book covers, stamps, posters, lobby cards, flyers, film titles, cassettes, VHS tapes, and other materials. It consists of a team from Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine & Morocco.

We were able to gather a huge community of Arabic design enthusiasts from all over the world within a very short period of time.

Our team conducted multiple public talks on our findings with the input of some of the designers from our community. It was important for us to utilize the database gathered for the public knowledge and make it as accessible as possible while we built our website.

On the fusion of folklore and religious styles in Arabic design with Jordanian designer, calligrapher, and type designer: Ali Almasri.

Last Things First: A Manifesto

At the beginning of 2021, we wanted to declare our viewpoint to our community on archiving and the reasons behind our work. We released our manifesto in an attempt to create a movement that would help further develop the practice of being rooted in our history in order to progress culturally.

Out of the need to discuss further our findings, the design repository was born where designers & researchers could write articles on their analysis behind our collections.
